The drive ends and the boat begins. Abaco Inn sits on a narrow stretch of Elbow Cay in the Bahamas' Abaco Islands, perched on a ridge where the Atlantic Ocean crashes against one shore and the calm waters of the Sea of Abaco lap against the other. It is a place defined by proximity to water on both sides, where the landscape itself feels like a threshold between wildness and stillness. The inn's architecture is cheerful and unhurried, a collection of colorful cottages and villas spread across the property's oceanfront grounds, each one angled to capture the prevailing trade winds and the particular light that moves across the cay throughout the day.

Accommodations at Abaco Inn range from ocean-view rooms and hammock-equipped cottages to larger villa suites with private decks overlooking the reef. Many rooms open directly onto the rocky Atlantic coastline, where natural tidal pools form along the shore. The harbour-side cottages offer a different rhythm entirely, with views across the sheltered water toward the cays beyond. Interiors are bright and deliberately unpretentious, furnished in island vernacular with painted wood, louvered shutters, and ceiling fans that turn slowly overhead. This is not a property that trades in opulence. Its luxury is spatial and elemental, rooted in sea air, horizon lines, and the sound of surf.

The inn's restaurant occupies a breezy terrace that has become a destination in its own right, drawing guests and locals for fresh Bahamian seafood, grilled catch of the day, and sunset cocktails. Dining here is timed to the light, with the harbour-side deck offering front-row seating as the sun drops behind the water each evening. A full bar serves tropical drinks alongside a curated selection of wines, and the atmosphere shifts naturally from casual daytime lunches to candlelit dinners as the sky darkens. The pool, set between the two coasts, provides a freshwater counterpoint to the ocean, with lounge chairs arranged for maximum sun and minimum interruption.

Elbow Cay itself is one of the most storied settlements in the Abacos, anchored by the village of Hope Town with its iconic candy-striped lighthouse, one of the last hand-cranked kerosene lighthouses in the world. The island is car-free in many stretches, navigated by golf cart and boat, lending the entire cay a pace that feels genuinely removed from the rhythms of daily life. Snorkeling along the barrier reef, bonefishing in the nearby flats, and kayaking the protected mangrove creeks are among the experiences that draw visitors back season after season. Abaco Inn serves as a natural base for all of it, close enough to Hope Town for an easy walk or ride, remote enough to feel like its own small world.

What stays with you is the duality. The Atlantic on one side, restless and turquoise and alive. The harbour on the other, flat and golden in the late afternoon. You move between them in minutes, and eventually you stop keeping track of which direction you are facing. That disorientation is the point. At Abaco Inn, the island's geography does the work that most hotels ask their design teams to do. It slows you down, reorients your attention, and returns you to something uncomplicated.

What we love about this stay

It's the between-ness that gets you — the way Elbow Cay is so narrow that you can walk from the sheltered turquoise of the Sea of Abaco to the full Atlantic thunder in minutes, and how the inn sits right on that spine, belonging to both waters and neither. Nothing here performs. The sun-bleached wood and louvered shutters and ceiling fans turning overhead feel less like design choices and more like inevitabilities, the kind of aesthetic that happens when a place has simply made peace with its climate. The scale is intimate enough that the bartender learns your drink, and the dining terrace faces west into sunsets that apparently refuse to repeat themselves. You're close enough to Hope Town's candy-striped lighthouse and picket-fence lanes to feel the Loyalist history woven into the cay, but the inn itself holds you in a quieter register — pool terrace dissolving into horizon, hammocks catching the trade winds, hours that refuse to announce themselves. It's a place that doesn't so much redefine rest as remind you what it was before you forgot.
